Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial decisions of your life. But for many people, it's also a deeply personal one — shaped by where you want to put down roots, what kind of community you want to be part of, and who you trust to get you there.

Most buyers know to ask an agent about their experience, their market knowledge, and their commission structure. Fewer think to ask about their values. And that's a gap worth closing.

Here's how to have that conversation — and what to listen for.

Why It Matters

Your agent will be in your corner for weeks or months. They'll help you decide which neighborhoods to consider, which offers to make, and which red flags to walk away from. They'll know your budget, your family situation, and your hopes for the future.

That's a relationship built on trust. And trust, for a lot of people, starts with shared values.

You don't have to agree with your agent on every political issue. But if you care about inclusive communities, environmental stewardship, or social equity — it's worth knowing whether the person representing you does too.

Questions to Ask

"What drew you to real estate?"

This is a gentle opener, but it's revealing. Agents motivated by commission talk about deals. Agents motivated by community talk about people. Listen for whether they mention clients' lives, neighborhoods, or a sense of purpose — or whether the conversation stays transactional.

"What does this neighborhood mean to the people who live here?"

A values-aligned agent doesn't just know the median home price. They know the history of a neighborhood, who's been there, and what's changing. They can tell you which communities are welcoming to newcomers and which ones have complicated histories worth understanding. If an agent only talks about comps, that's useful — but it's not the whole picture.

"How do you handle a situation where a client and a seller have very different backgrounds or beliefs?"

This is a more direct question, and a good agent won't flinch at it. Look for someone who talks about professionalism, discretion, and respect — but who also isn't evasive about having a point of view. An agent who has never thought about this question probably hasn't had to.

"Are you involved in your community outside of real estate?"

Volunteering, local organizing, board service, civic engagement — these aren't requirements, but they're signals. An agent who shows up in their community off the clock tends to bring that same energy to their clients.

"Have you ever walked away from a client or a deal because something felt wrong?"

This one separates agents of integrity from agents of convenience. A good answer doesn't have to be dramatic — but there should be one. An agent who has never encountered an ethical line probably hasn't been looking for one.

"What's your take on fair housing?"

Every licensed agent is legally required to follow fair housing law. But there's a difference between compliance and commitment. Listen for whether they talk about fair housing as a floor or a ceiling — as the bare minimum, or as something they actively think about and advocate for.

What to Watch For Beyond the Words

Values aren't just stated — they're demonstrated. Pay attention to:

  • Who they work with. Does their client base reflect the diversity of the community, or does it skew heavily toward one demographic?
  • How they talk about neighborhoods. Coded language around "character," "feel," or "the right kind of buyers" can be a signal worth noticing.
  • How they treat people in the room. Are they attentive to everyone, or do they default to the highest earner or most dominant voice?
  • Whether they listen. An agent who interrupts, redirects, or talks over you in an interview will do the same when you're trying to make a decision.

You're Allowed to Walk Away

Here's the thing most people don't realize: you are interviewing them. You don't owe any agent your business, your loyalty, or an explanation. If something feels off — if the chemistry isn't right, if the answers feel rehearsed, if you leave the conversation with less confidence than you started with — trust that.

The right agent will make you feel heard, respected, and genuinely represented. That's not too much to ask. It's exactly what you deserve.
